Airway Dentistry

The Best Tools for the Best Smile

Airway Dentistry focuses on how the structures of the mouth impact breathing. Healthy breathing depends on an open airway, functional jaw joints, and proper airflow through the nasal passages. If any of these components are compromised, it can cause disordered breathing and other negative health effects. Dental professionals have a thorough understanding of the structures of the mouth and face, allowing us to treat various breathing conditions involving the oral and facial structures.

Signs of Disorder Breathing:

  • Worn tooth surfaces
  • Increased tooth decay
  • Small jaws
  • A sore or red throat
  • Migraines or headaches
  • Jaw or facial pain
  • Dry mouth
  • Gum disease
  • Tongue or lip tie

We will perform a thorough oral exam to determine if you have any signs of sleep-disordered breathing. If we suspect you may be suffering from sleep-disordered breathing, we may order a sleep study. Sleep studies are generally performed at the patient’s home or at a lab. If a diagnosis is made and your condition can be treated with airway dentistry, we will create a treatment plan to find you relief. This treatment plan may include a custom oral appliance that is worn nightly. If your condition is outside of our experience, we will refer you to a trusted specialist in the community.
